The Veiled Gods
Summary
The Veiled Gods are the divine pantheon that once watched over the Halcyon Domain. They chose God-King Othedias as their bridge to mortality, guiding the realm through an age of prosperity and wonder. When Othedias betrayed them with his blasphemous machinations, they rained destruction upon the world and then abandoned it entirely in The Apostasy.
Now, the Veiled Gods are silent—absent from a world they forsook, leaving The Age of Umbra/03 Factions/The Enduring to suffer the consequences of one ruler's ambition.
Domains
The full nature and domains of the Veiled Gods have been lost to the destruction of The Apostasy. What is known:
- They were powerful enough to create and sustain the prosperous Old World
- They chose Othedias as their mortal representative
- They created the Grand Ordinants who served their will
- They maintained the cosmic veil that protected the mortal realm from outside entities
The Betrayal
God-King Othedias, chosen as the bridge between mortal and divine, conspired with his Grand Ordinants and Aetherlords to shift the balance of celestial power. The exact nature of his blasphemy is unknown, but it enraged the pantheon beyond measure.
Divine Retribution
When the Veiled Gods discovered Othedias's treachery:
- They rained destruction upon the Halcyon Domain, ending the Old World
- They sundered the cycle of the soul, creating the Soul Blight
- They abandoned the mortal realm entirely (the Apostasy)
- They left the cosmic veil unguarded, allowing unknown entities to peer in
Worship
In the Age of Umbra, worship of the Veiled Gods takes many forms:
- Zealot factions seek ways to communicate with the absent gods, hoping to find forgiveness or answers
- Abandoned temples still stand in ruins throughout the realm, some hiding consecrated embers
- Hermetic societies guard texts about the gods and prophecies of their possible return
- Common folk pray to gods who do not answer, hoping against hope
Obscure Members
The Veiled Gods included many lesser deities whose names and natures have been largely forgotten. Temples to these obscure gods can be found buried throughout the Halcyon Domain—including one recently uncovered in the Shalk Chasm.
